Inside the Multi-Trade Workshops at West Suffolk College

Capturing Skills in Action 🎥

Back in July, I had the opportunity to film at West Suffolk College’s Built Environment Campus, focusing on the Construction Multi-Trade workshops. These workshops are a fantastic space where students can explore multiple trades — from carpentry and joinery to painting, decorating, and brickwork — all under one roof.

The idea behind the multi-trade programme is simple but powerful: give learners a broad foundation across construction disciplines before they choose a specialism or move into apprenticeships. It’s hands-on, practical, and built around real-world scenarios.

Why It Matters 🛠️

  • Exploration – Students don’t always know which trade is the right fit. Multi-trade training gives them the freedom to try different skills.

  • Employability – Employers value adaptable workers. Having a broader set of skills makes students more versatile in the workplace.

  • Progression – Whether learners choose to specialise or continue into apprenticeships, the programme builds a strong foundation.

Behind the Lens 🎬

For this project, I wanted to show the energy of the workshops — the mock-up bays buzzing with activity, the precision of blockwork training, and the creativity on display in painting and decorating.

Using a combination of gimbal shots and clean framing, I aimed to highlight both the details of the work and the scale of the learning environment. The result is a short film that celebrates the mix of traditional skills and modern teaching that West Suffolk College provides.

Collaboration 🤝

A big thank you to the multi-trade lecturing team for opening their doors and letting me capture the action. And of course, recognition to Shane Langthorne and David Warren (MCIPHE, MSET) for ensuring the building itself is always ready to shine.

Final Thoughts

Filming inside the multi-trade workshops was a reminder of why I love doing this work. It’s not just about creating visuals — it’s about telling stories that connect education, industry, and opportunity.

If you’d like to showcase your own training space, event, or project in the same cinematic style, feel free to get in touch.
